In the framework of the project 1071 km of long-offset 2D seismic streamer data in combination with GWL FloatSeis™ super-long offset data were acquired to form a set of reference seismic lines with an accurate and reliable velocity model for the Guyana basin.

Guyana Basin 2D seismic lines running offshore Guyana in the North Atlantic served to form a grid of reference velocity lines to calibrate and control various 2D CDP towed seismic streamer surveys held in the region. GWL FloatSeis™ super-long offset survey was performed simultaneously with 2D seismic survey recorded by a 12 km streamer. The signal was emitted by a 7060 cu. inch air gun array. The main goal of the 2D CDP seismic was to cross the major regional structures and approve/disapprove African and South American conjugate margins similarities, discovering twin plays to the shelf edge plays found and drilled offshore Senegal few years earlier. 2D CDP towed seismic streamer data had problems with imaging low velocity layers below high-velocity formations allocated in the upper part of the section. Long offset (30km+) FloatSeis™ data allowed to obtain velocity model updates. The updated velocity model helped to suppress multiples, refine structural geometry of reflecting horizons, perform properly time to depth conversions and to eliminate pseudo structural elements linked with false velocity anomalies.

GWL FloatSeis™ super-long offset acquisition parameters:

  • Recording units interval – 10 km

  • Recorded offsets – 30 km+
